Hello everyone! I am so happy to be sharing some great professional clothing ideas with Made for Mermaids and Patterns For Pirates.
Now, I was a stay at home momma for a couple of years. I finally decided to go back to the work world. What does that mean for me? It means that I needed to create a whole new wardrobe for work! While I was living in flip flops and jeans for the majority of the past 2 and 1/2 years, I needed to add some business casual items into my repertoire.
I now work in a Behavioral Health Hospital, and help as a liaison between the community and the hospital. So, I am doing tours, setting up meetings, and traveling around. Being one of the “faces” of my hospital, means that I need to make sure I looked professional, as well as approachable.
Patterns for Pirates and Made for Mermaids offer so many patterns. It would be super easy to use any number of them on professional work wear. From the SOS pants and peg legs, to Mama Claire and Everyday Elegance, there are so many options for a business casual look. I chose the Made for Mermaids, Mama Lauren, because it is super versatile, and can be a made into a shirt or a dress.
For my dress, I chose to do it without the pintucks, with a blog post from Made For Mermaids found here. The Mama Lauren is made for light, flowy woven fabrics, and has a bust dart for shaping. There is a keyhole neck option that can add an optional fun look. The sleeve options include different lengths, as well as an elastic wrist for a billowy look. An optional belt tie is supposed to be sewn in the last pin tuck on the side. My dress was sans pintucks, so I used the side seam for the belt placement.
I absolutely LOVE how it turned out. Also, I have a pair of sweater knit peg legs that I am wearing as tights with boots once the temperatures drop below 90 degrees.
I think this is a wonderful dress for a business casual look, as well as a dressier office look. A Mama Lauren shirt would also make a great top with slacks (or SOS pants without back pockets).
